Rakı Sofrası(BYOB)

2019

4 Channel Video Installation

“Rakı” is a Turkish high proof alcohol made with grapes and anise. It is acompanied by Turkish tapas, called mezes, druing long, heart to heart dinners.

With 4 channel video projection and a simple rakı table set in the middle, consisting of melon, feta and rakı the installation surrounds the visitor in a “Turkish” rakı dinner. The room boasts with the anise smells of the rakı. On each wall are closeups of the diners, seating them around the table the same was they dined when the footage was taken. Their unscripted conversation, with Turkish music in the background, now unfolds around the visitors.

The gatherings around a rakı table lasts hours. These anise-smelling conversations illicit confrontation by not only the high proof rakı, but also the contract of deep connection one partakes in by sitting down together.
